A Quantum of Solids…
There’s no doubt that for some sites, particularly where space to work telehandlers (or similar) is short, the ‘European’ concept of a tow-able or self-propelled tower crane for placing construction materials can be a real boon.
Of course some careful thought has to be given to the logistics of getting approximately 30 tonnes in one lump, in and out of a site.
In this case, Quantum Homes of Surrey and developers of note, highlighted a concern with the extraction process. It transpired that the next door property had a sizeable basement, which extended within a metre or 2 of the exit path for the Liebherr tower crane belonging to Sparrow Cranes.
So before the process of removing it could be considered, engineers were tasked with mitigating the axle loads as it was to pass along the 3.0m wide driveway between the buildings.
They in turn contacted the technical team here at ‘roadplatehire’ and a proposal for a combination of a crushed aggregate bed, levelled and compacted, was to be overlain with a carpet of our GPRM’s – and to give this a rock solid runway, it was in turn was topped with a combination of some of our larger range of 25mm plates at 4 metres x 2 metres, and 3 m x 1.5m. This ensured that any point loading, and the resultant localised underground thrust, was kept to an absolute minimum.
All this was planned just before the Covid-19 lockdown measures, meaning the whole scheme was put ‘on ice’ until it was safe to resume work.
On WC 19th May 2020 our team and equipment arrived on site for the 3 day install period. Supetrucks and SALLY’s proved invaluable as always, for safely placing units with pinpoint accuracy in confined spaces. The crane came out without a hitch and we removed the plates the following week.

Could have done better Greta?
It seems a shame that so much damage was done to the environment in the name of stopping damage to the environment.
A call to us at Road Plate Hire would have furnished them with some of the ever popular ZIGMATS (*Contains recycled plastic) and instead of a tabloid slating they could have had a well planned event and nice clean feet!
Never mind – maybe next time now you know eh?

‘Flying Scotsman’ – A First Class Service!
We were very pleased to have the chance to work with our friends at the Watercress Line in Hampshire again, helping them gear up to welcome the record-breaking Flying Scotsman, the most famous steam locomotive in the world, for the first time this February. The locomotive will be in public service for five running days: 14th and 29th February and the 1st, 7th and 8th March 2020.
This engineering mega-star always pulls in huge crowds, so the management team knew that having a 1st class attraction with 2nd class car-parking access was not an option.
So we were called in for a temporary upgrade of the track ways around their field cum overflow car-parking area.
Our top team have been busily installing 500 + of the ever popular ZIGMATS.
Plus some walkovers to keep your feet out of the mud.
So visitors can be guaranteed a silky-smooth ride both on and off the rails!

Holidays are comin’!?
We’re all familiar with the multi-million dollar, decades-long publicity campaign that tries to convince another generation that a fat man painted on the back of red and white trucks that – quite frankly have distasteful amounts of lights on them and contain several metric tonnes of a sugary solution of questionable nutritional value – somehow represents the true spirit of Christmas!
But I’m here to tell you that this is completely wrong. It is in fact blue and white lorries, driven generally by gentlemen of no more than yeomanry proportions, delivering Christmas trees and other festive adornments that truly herald the Festive Season!
This fine specimen was transported and erected on site in Lewes early yesterday morning for purveyors of arboricultural delights and experts in all things leafy…

Downing Street – Strong and Stable
Whatever your political colour, it’s fairly certain that you’d like to see both strength and stability in Downing Street. Not to mention the avoidance of pitfalls.
So step forward our very Heavy duty SERIES 38 plates, having been put to good use in the most famous street in the Kingdom. Performing their function in calm serenity whilst all about them whirls about in constitutional crisis.
Also note how the SALLY Safelifter takes back control for effortless lifting and pin point positioning.

Love At First Site
Our long time customer, Lenmark, is upping its game and getting ready for solid season in groundworks for 2019. Having hired various storage and office solutions, including the ever-so handy 12ft x 8ft AV Office units, they enquired as to whether we’d be willing to supply units to the same smart but tough specification.
We were more than happy to help, and even managed to nail down their somewhat unique corporate colour scheme for all 6 of the new Anti Vandal Site Office Units.

Bog Standard
As machinery gets bigger, the ground loadings get greater therefore the timber crane mats need to get thicker.
So we are now carrying these 3.0m x 1.0 m x 200 mm thick EKKI/BOG MATS available for hire and sale.
If summer decides it’s not coming for a month or two more, we can still get you out across the bad ground with your biggest kit.

Out with the old & in with the new
Since the venerable old LISTER BLACKSTONE gensets were installed in National Grid’s Wymondley Sub-Station things have changed a bit. Not least the installation of a formidable automatic sliding gate.
So when a client got the job of updating all 3 of the 14 tonne beasties, they were going to need to give some consideration to the effects on that by the 200 tonne mobile crane required to lift them out safely.
Our technical team was approached to come up with a plating solution that would withstand the loadings, and provide ‘deflection space’ underneath to avoid any contact. Although this was relatively straightforward with us having access to the indomitable SERIES 38 plates, it did mean that once they were installed, the gates could not be operated as there wouldn’t be room underneath.
So at the clients request we had drivers and HIAB vehicles attending the site right across the weekend, to place and remove the installation as and when required. SALLY of course, made the whole thing super slick.

Want to get ahead? Get a Mat!
Regardless of the dark clouds gathering across the Channel the fact of the matter is that Spring is just over the horizon! Primroses are lighting up the verges and the bulbs are bursting into bloom and the days are getting noticeably longer.
So why not get a jump on the jump and ensure you project isn’t held back by a few April showers by getting one of our many different temporary roadway systems in situ asap?
Whether it’s a few cars and vans for a landscaping project where the client doesn’t want the lawn ruined, through to a 150 tonne crane to cross full blown floodplain, RoadPlateHire has the answer with a range of kit and a team of experts to install with a minimum of fuss.

Even higher for hire!
After 10 months in the making our new Volvo tractor unit c/w 65 tonne per metre has arrived!
So plus having the ability to lift and shift 40 foot shipping containers, 32 foot accommodation units and being able to couple to our full range of trailers, we’ve built a lovely 4.50 m long super-body to fit it.
This is the ultimate expression so far of the Supertruck concept bringing the following phenomenal features into a package the size of most skip lorries:
- Deliver and spot a 20ft ISO container at 17.00 metres radius
- Fly jib extending to 32.5 metres meaning we can place a 12 mm roadplate 106 feet away
- Fully hydraulic craning winch
- Front outriggers, giving it fantastic duties in the full 360 degrees
Basically anything that needs to go far and wide is what this machine is all about!
