PHB Contractors has been doing some reinforced concrete works in the area right outside our West Sussex transport depot.

Due to its position, the forward corner of the new concrete had to be trafficked with LGVs hours after it had been poured and way before it had cured. Even with the aid of accelerating agents in the concrete blend it was never going to be sufficiently dry.

So this little multifaceted solution was installed:

  • A 6m x 3m x 25mm steel road plate to give good coverage;
  • Some 12mm thick HDPE
  • Our HDPE ZIGMATS were used as deflection spacers so that, although the plate could only be supported on 3 sides, even when driven over with artic’ bulkers or low loaders, it would give clearance for the steel to bow and flex fractionally without the risk of it touching the fresh surface underneath;
  • AADEPT‘s on traffic facing leading edges. Preventing the turning vehicles ‘shunting’ the plate and stopping the risk of tyre damage too.

All in all a clever bit of installation that saved a world of grief on the Monday morning when dozens of vehicles had to enter and leave the live site!

Swamp things…

A scheduled power grid shut down to replace a set of rotten wooden poles hit a series of snags. The wetland area in Kent in which they are situated is a well established water meadow, with important bog and marsh species of plants and animals.

This meant that a ‘zero harm’ policy to the habitat was applied by Natural England to the required access for men, machinery and materials needed to carry out the urgent works.

The ideal solution was 250 pieces of 5m x 1m x 100 mm Bogmats

Access to the site was complicated by a narrow gateway and a steep gradient from the meadow up to the roadway, preventing large vehicle access for the 150 tonnes of kit required..

So Roadplatehire sent an install team in with a heavy duty telehandler to bring the mats from the trucks to field level, which serviced an expertly operated excavator with a grab that swiftly laid the roadway way in.

The criteria and process set out by the various stakeholders including Natural England, although necessary, frustrated the clients project to the point where the work was having to begin, even as we lay the last few elements.

But all went well and within a week the site was vacated, letting nature get of with the important business of spring flowering and waking up after a very long and wet winter.

Betting BIG on Black!

In addition to the shiny new website, we’ve been continuing to make some shiny new investments in the excellent 150 tonne* rated TUFF TRAK system.

These are the big sisters of the ever popular ZIGMAT/EUROMAT system.

Having had the foresight to forward order a sizeable quantity back in the dark days of winter when most people were still eating turkey sandwiches, means that that we are poised to make further in-roads (all puns intended), to the busy show season.

The first 200 metres have arrived today with many more to come.

For a quick laying, super heavy duty temporary road system, TUFF TRAK takes some beating. So if you got doubts about taking big loads into ‘terra incognita’ or ground of a fragile nature, get online or pick up the phone and get your own section of tractable polymer super-highway!

Road Plate Hire

As the name suggests we are the original and best when it comes to road plate rental, road plate sales and heavy duty roadplates. Over the years we’ve built up a much wider range of products and services we can’t be beaten on, such as specialist and custom roadplates, trench crossing plates for large goods vehicles, site facilities and truck and concrete lorry hire.

Our updated site showcases the thickest range of standard roadplates, at 6mm, 12mm, 20mm, 25mm, 38mm, even up to 70 mm thickness, and the largest roadplate sizes, with 3m x 1.5m, 4m x 2m and 6m x 3m all available from stock.

Even with these extra large steel plate for hire and sale, we’ve not forgotten the core 1 inch gauge, ¾ inch thick steel, ½ inch thickness and the 8 x 4 x 12mm, 20mm and 25mm standard street works sizes that still form the heart of our fleet.

We’ve added some improvements on our site to explain our capacities in the factory; such as shot blasting and ever improving anti-skid coatings for use on the road and on motorways, covering excavations, collapsed manhole covers and bridging holes in driveways, haul roads and access points for construction traffic.

Many of the roadplates in our range come with the excellent SALLY safelift system, undoubtedly the safest way to deliver and lift road-plates, plus features such as airside specification, chamfered edge, mitred and bevelled edged steel plates, counter-bored (countersunk) holes for fixing to the road and textured surfaces for grip and anti slip functions.

Our site now also highlights a range of roadplate delivery options for delivering, placing and installing road plates. With HIAB and lorry loading crane options. We can also lay out plates and assist with Lift Plans, Risk Assessment and Method Statements (RAMS) for our highly trained in house crews, right across the U.K.

We never tire of helping our customers find the right roadplates for their specific job, so give us a call for some practical advice and the best prices!

A Royal Appointment…

A noteworthy electrical contractor had a project requiring some trenching in and around Hampton Court Palace.

This magnificent complex of halls and gardens was begun by Cardinal Wolsey in the early 16th century, but it soon attracted the attention of Henry VIII, who apparently finished the work. (Legend has it there exists in the Royal archives, a calling card penned by the man himself – Henry Tudor – King of All England – Monarch of this Realm – Defender of the one true Faith – Part time building work undertaken 🙂 )

George Burling in the hire department took the enquiry and had some non standard 1.25 x 1.25 x 12mm steel plates made up to allow the contractor to complete the project safely and stay within the confines of the very strict areas to be affected.

Cycle-Pathic Tendencies

The Horsey cycle path at Eastbourne commissioned by East Sussex County Council and Costain has presented Landbuild Ltd with a range of challenges. The fundamentally wetland nature with the associated issues surrounding bringing in construction equipment to land that was not only waterlogged but ecologically sensitive had to be given careful thought and planning.

In fact the first order of business when the project began was an installation of nearly 2,000 ZIGMATS to form a protective trackway along the entire 1.8 kilometre route. Thus avoiding plant or vehicles coming into contact with the ground surface.

Much more recently, the long and elegant Infracore bridge sections provided by Lifespan Structures Ltd of Hampshire had to be brought into site, transferred from an Abnormal length load trailer, onto a HIAB vehicle, along 900 metres of the nearly completed cycle path, to the lift site. It was then carefully lifted into position so that Landbuild staff could to the final fix.

Even in this closing phase, problems that were encountered and overcome included:

  • 15.50m x 3.0m wide load brought in by road. Care of our trombone trailer and driver Richard ‘Luggy’ Lainsbury
  • Carrying an 11.00m load on a 8.0m long body. Which required a bespoke 4 piece carrier frame, knocked up by our in house fabricators in double quick time.
  • Driving a 28t plus 8 wheel HIAB outfit along a track, actually built for something more along the lines of a Raleigh Chopper. Which required skill and care by driver Tony Hill and some GPRM’s laid around the corners on the sensitive sections.
  • Setting the whole thing up alongside the stream on a platform of suitable strength and traction. Sorted by Landbuild’s excellent groundwork team levelling the area and installing 12 of our mighty Tuff Track panels forming a rock solid base. Enhanced further with some of our 3m x 1.5m x 25 mm steel plates for the outrigger positions
  • The actual lifting phase was in many ways the easy part. Aided by one of our slinger/signaller/banksmen, Chris Carlier
  • A series of Lift Plans, to be approved by the main contractor, covering all of the above elements and taking account of the many site conditions.

Having the whole range of services, knowhow and products required in one place with us at Southdown, made managing this phase infinitely simpler and ultimately safer, than trying to draw assets and expertise from a range of different vendors.

GOAL!

Tottenham Hotspur are well under way with the high grade construction of their fantastic new ground.

On the last working day before Christmas a client needed 8 pieces 3m x 1.5 x 25 mm plates to stabilise an area to keep the gargantuan task of erecting the complex prefabricated structural members moving along. One of which will form the the largest single tier stand in Europe and therefore required some epic cranes.

Luckily, Spurs fan Richard ‘Lugs’ Lainsbury was on his way down the M1 with his trusty Volvo and Moffett, after demobilising another big project and was more than happy to to put one in the back of the net for his team!

The first NOEL!

Site – Shopping Centre, central Leeds

Yes we are aware that Halloween hasn’t happened yet, but there is a plantation of Christmas trees to put up around the country and it’s up to us (aka the 11 Dwarves) to assist with many of them.

The first one of this year required a bit of thinking about because floor loadings from the associated plant required to bring in and decorate this, Europe’s largest indoor tree (according to our client*) exceeded the SWL of the floor. A solution to spread the load safely was required.

So Richard ‘Lugs’ Lainsbury and his trusty Moffett forklift and curtainsider arrived at 20.00 hrs on Saturday evening with 38 panels of our very own design of POLYROAD temporary road-way which was a far better than the steel plate solution suggested originally, as it doesn’t scratch or bruise a decorative stone flooring and its upper surface means that skating or rolling heavy loads across them is also an option.

He and our install team had to get them down, route the tree and machinery into the heart of the atrium and get all of them back out and transport off site by 08.00 hrs on the Sunday for when the shops opened up.

It was close but we did it!
